boffer wrote:Hi Jennifer,

Your confusion is understandable. The three types of corn you describe by height, are also known as short, mid, and long season corn varieties. I first heard of folks planting 4 to a square last summer in the old forum, and I was appalled! There's just no way, I thought! I have a favorite long season variety that I have grown for years, one per sf; I wasn't aware of the smaller varieties.

Here's the root structure of a tall, long season corn. You can see why I couldn't fathom the idea of more than one per square!

Growing corn question - Page 2 Empty Corny questions

Post  nancy 5/16/2011, 9:55 am

I didn't think I was ready, but my garden neighbor is giving me some corn starts. I just can't say no to new babies that need a home. (He also gave me 5 big boy tomato plants yesterday!) I have a 5x5 empty bed that I began filling right away. It needs a lot more compost, but I think I can take care of that this week. There is so much good information on this board already, but what I want to know is has anyone tried Argent corn yet? How did it do for you? How tall did it get? The box is bigger than I would normally want, but the wood was free. This is a hybrd variety, so I believe I can get 4 per square. I don't know how many he is giving me, so I may get more. If I am not interested in saving seed, can I get other varieties? And I now have a place to put my pole beans! Do those go 1 per square or 1 per stalk? How many beans do I really need? Thanks all!

Growing corn question - Page 2 Empty Re: Growing corn question

I've got 4 corn plants per square (sweet early variety) and they are going gangbusters. I planted peas around the perimeter, and they seem more than happy, and a few gourds/pumpkins to round out the three sisters. I have tassels on the corn and am concerned that they won't actually pollinate. Has anyone actually ever had good luck planting 4 per square?? Anything I can do to make sure it happens?
