camprn wrote:Turan, good post! I didn't lay my tomato plants down when transplanting, but I did plant them deeply, last year they got to over 8'tall, the year before, over 10' tall., Here are the roots of eggplants last year. I cannot see m to find the tomato root photo. must be on the old computer.
I went looking through the old garden stuffs to see if I could find tomato roots. Broccolli yes but no tomato. I am curious now if I can see evidense of roots growing along the buried stem. Bea posted about this too. My plants grow about 6 foot tall by August when I start pruning heavily to ripen them.

O for goodness sake how did I miss this? Jeeeeeeesh.
BUt I posted some articles on this in the thread Bea had. Seems like it suggested that deep planting makes for more roots in the South (like acara has) than up here.

Here is another thread on tomato roots. I notice that boffer's roots (grown in a cool climate for sure) are nice a big but not showing roots up the stem.

I planted deep and one sideways. I figure the roots need the moisture reserves in the summer of the depths. maybe it helps with BER. A theory anyways.
But after a life time of thinking it was best to plant deep or sideways I am not so sure it matters here.

Not being the greatest record keeper it will be interesting.
This will be interesting, I have never laid them down before.

WOW those are impressive pictures
I have had mine in my hoop house for a month now, the first lot died and I have a second lot that is doing nothing.
Must be warmer in yours.
