Harvesting Garlic
I can hardly wait for my garlic harvest which is still a month away at least. I found this video I thought was pretty darn good and worth sharing.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
I'm with you, camprn, the remaining bulbs of last year's harvest are getting even with me by trying to sprout, which means extra prep time to remove the bitter sprout before chopping them. This year, I planted a (supposedly) short-season garlic touted to be ready for harvest in early June, called Chinese Pink. This afternoon I stuck a finger down into the soil and felt around the swelling bulb. Dang, we may be harvesting in three weeks! (Normally we start harvest after July 4.) This fall, I shall scour garlic sellers' websites for more cultivars: early, mid-season and late, and consider storage ratings along with taste. How about y'all? Nonna

Re: Harvesting Garlic
I've got Spanish Roja which is a mid-season. Then Silver Rose, a late season softneck. And the one I'm looking most forward to, German Red. I planted all of mine in October, and so far non of it seems close.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
I've planted a few of grocery garlic and 2 cloves of elephant garlic. Elephant garlic is blooming. The other garlic grew, but never did look real good and now is beginning to bend over. Well, now there is a little bulb growing where the garlic is bending over. This is my first time growing, so may dig tomm. and see how they are. What is the little bulb? My egypt onions do this. Should this be considered edible, or should it be planted?
I watched the video. Thanks for that. I like the little pop-up that says not to wash! Did you add that or was it with the video?

Re: Harvesting Garlic
littlejo, hardneck garlics send up scapes that form a batch of tiny cloves, called bulbils. You have already noticed that the bulbils forming on your garlic look very different from your elephant garlic (member of leek family) flowers. That's because true garlics "cut to the chase" by making tiny replicas of themselves--bulbils--to propagate; no flowers for the bees. Your experience is very interesting in that grocery garlic is almost always a soft-neck variety and does not send up scapes. Yours did, but I can't explain why, unless it was stressed and took the scape/bulbil way to propagate itself. Or, perhaps, it had been treated with something to keep it from sprouting, but when it did..... I don't know. Bulbils, when fully mature, are kinda fun to sprinkle in an empty space and let grow for spring cuttings as garlicky chives. Or each bulbil planted separately in a nursery bed to grow for two years, then be harvested for culinary use.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
So, when the garlic sends up the scapes, is that any indicator of the garlic being ready to harvest? Nonna and camp, you guy's have really been a great help with the garlic this year. Kudos to you both!

Re: Harvesting Garlic
No, when the garlic sends up scapes, prepare for a spring culinary treat: steamed scapes! Cutting off the scapes will direct more energy to on-going bulb production. So, while the scape is still curled, and tender, clip them off--about 7 or 8 inches of stem. Cut off the long pointed 'nose' above the immature bulbils. Steam the scapes until tender and serve as a vegetable side dish. For a real treat, whip up a batch of aioli (Italian garlic mayonnaise) and enjoy as a side to steak and baked 'tater. Hmmmm, would eating baby garlics with garlic mayo be Kosher?

Re: Harvesting Garlic
The tips of my garlic are turning yellow, just a very small part of the tips, not sure if that was the heat last week, or whether they are starting to be ready, but it seems early.
Also I did not keep track of the actual varieties....
but I do know I have lots of different ones, was given many last fall.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
Great video, thanks! I'm still patiently watching for scapes on my garlic since it's a hardneck. But HOLY COW they're huge plants! I didn't expect them to be so tall! I swear they're three feet tall right now and still growing every day. How tall does garlic get before it's ready to harvest?
Re: Harvesting Garlic
littlesapphire, you certainly have me beat in the big garlic arena! I've never had true garlic grow like that--elephant garlic, yes, but regular garlic...Wow! What variety did you plant? Here in Western Oregon, we've not yet seen signs of scapes, for us it's a June treat. Luckily, scapes store well in the refrigerator's vegetable crisper, so we can enjoy them for about a month, starting sometime in June. I think it's important to harvest the scapes before the bulbils get very large, they're tenderer then; and the energy which would have gone into bulbil production is redirected to enlarging the underground bulb and its cloves. Even if you don't intend to eat them, it's important to remove the scapes.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
GWN, it's a little early for the leaves on your garlic to start turning yellow. Have you considered scratching in a bit of bone meal around your plants? I'm stumped on a reason for the tips to turn, but the first thing that came to mind was a nutrient deficiency of some sort.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
What happens if you wait a little too long to harvest garlic. Mine are getting yellow tips as well. Planted in Nov and earlier in the season I put some bone meal on them. Pulled one yesterday because I needed some for dinner. Here's what I found, but I would like to delay until at least mid June for harvest in hope they will get a bit bigger. Shallot in picture is definately not ready and they share the bed.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
I don't harvest mine until the green tops are mostly yellowing, not putting out new foliage and beginning to fall over. I withhold watering for several days to a week then harvest.

partial harvest today.
Blossom garlic.
Need to get the rest before the rains set in. This variety is the only one really turning yellow and falling over. So hope I can delay some on the others.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
I've harvested all my garlic. All of my softnecks developed individual bulbs. They are small heads but all formed. Basically none of my hardneck garlic formed individual bulbs. They are all just one single head...Anyway, I was curious how to go about braiding garlic and found this video:

Re: Harvesting Garlic
Well, I did my first braid! My garlic is nowhere near as nice and big as the garlic in the video, but mission accomplished
For now I've hung it in the basement and it's awesome going down there and getting a whiff of the garlic

Re: Harvesting Garlic
Rooster
the reason you have no scapes is because your garlic is soft neck garlic.
Scapes grow on hard neck. On the flip side, you cannot braid hard neck garlic.
Apparently the tendency is to grow hard neck in colder climates. Your braid/braids look great. BTW  are all those pictures of one braid in different settings, or are they all different ones.

Re: Harvesting Garlic
Thanks GWN. I had about 50 hard neck and about the same soft neck. Of all the hard necks, I only had one scape We had strong winds and much warmer temps than usual this spring which I think attributed to my poor outcome of the hard neck garlic.
Lol, braiding the garlic starts to get a bit confusing for me the more I add to the braid It's hard for me to keep track of all of the different strands...

ROoster, Very nice looking garlic! And good job on braiding.
I just did my braiding the other day too. Wish I had more garlic to practice with.
