Be afraid, be very afraid.....
Well, fellow N&C Midwesterners, it is still one week before my official 'average last frost' and it hit 96 today, projected low tonight of 63. My tomatoes and peppers have been in the ground for a week (one month earlier than usual). I look at my barren squares that have not yet been planted with the rest of my warm weather crops and feel like I am so behind (because we have not had a frost for a month) but wait! They usually aren't put out until mid-June. I am actually ahead, no matter what my bare boxes keep screaming at me! What is this summer going to bring to all of us?
I am very afraid.....

It IS pretty scary
I read where March was hotter in every state in the US that it has ever been in any of those states since it was recorded.
It has been very warm here for a week and I have toms and peppers in ground, but forecast for tomorrow night is 2 degrees, which I think is about 35 farenheit.
BUSY evening tomorrow

I read that about March as well. The lowest low in our 10-day forecast is 48, and that is only one night. The rest are all mid 50's to mid-60's. I love having the extended season (I did start seeds inside early because of our unusually mild winter) but if it is 96 in May, I really hate to think of July and August!
michellentn - I have Seminole Pumpkin and Rich Sweetness Melon seeds in the ground, as well as Dragon's Tongue and Tenderpod beans, just waiting for them to pop their little heads up. As well as 12 squares of carrots for Carrot Week 2012! Also have some herbs, Yukon Gold potatoes, and 2 Lipstick Pepper plants in the ground. Still have 46 empty squares. Will do more carrots, more beans, maybe some beets, and broccoli. I do have Norland Red potatoes to go in still, but it may already be too late for them.

Unfortunately the zones only tell us how COLD winter temps might be, not how LONG winter might be!

I never thought about it that way. I thought zones had something to do with last frost, but you are right

I guess in many ways the zones do not tell us much at all. I think when I lived in Oregon on the coast we were likely zone 8 or so, since it never froze there.
However I could never grow anything there, since it ALSO never got warm either.
And the zones they are a changing....
but our zones have not changed

They do tell us what kind of fruit trees and perennials we can have, tho'. I miss having rosemary, lavender, citrus trees and various other things in my yard that do not survive -25F!

Re: Be afraid, be very afraid.....
Yes, I REALLY miss the huge rosemary that just grew all year.
I planted one in a large pot last year and dragged it into the minimally heated greenhouse last fall, It has flowered beautifully now.
Lavender.... well it all died.
Rhododendrums, I sure miss them and my husband is going to try to find a hardy magnolia tree that might survive here.

The commercial potato growers around me are still preparing the fields for planting. You still have time to plant.

The lilacs and apples are starting to bloom. The river is high and full of melt off. But the sunflowers are not sprouting yet. It is an odd spring. As if the nights are colder than the days trick us with. I wonder what the summer brings.
It is raining now and supposed to frost tonight or tomorrow when the storm starts clearing. I left everything covered for the day.

Re: Be afraid, be very afraid.....
I read on the Weather Channel alerts this week that temps in California for March averaged 1 - 3 degrees below normal. I guess my state was overlooked in the other article.

GWN - do you just add some flowers to a standard recipe or do you have a special recipe for them?
It is HOT HOT HOT and STEAMY here in SD. We are having a nice rain right now, but it is 7:15 am and 81F already. Supposed to get up to 93, and when the clouds part and the sun hits the wet... ! Picked a quart of beans this morning before they could steam on the vine. Broccoli starts are ready to go outside, but not sure if they will survive the heat!

Re: Be afraid, be very afraid.....
Hi goosegirl
I just put the dried lavender flowers in any old oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe.
I spent the last few days planting spinach and peas.
My tomatoes I am watching minute by minute and figure I might get a ripe tomato in the next 24 hours..... a whole month behind last year
We also have had really hot weather, but not humid, the one day last week that was humid ended in a huge storm...
It is supposed to cool off a bit today and so I am going to take a day off looking after my garden and go for a long run ...( looking after ME )
My beans are only just starting to come in, perhaps I will be picking them tonite, hope you do not get TOOO hot there

Re: Be afraid, be very afraid.....
GWN, check with Nichols Garden Nursery for the rosemary variety "Arp." Ours here in St. Helens is getting ready to turn 15 years old. It has survived even the deepest freeze we've had. Caveat: it's a good tasting rosemary, but not the best. However, fresh second best is always better than dried, IMHO. Arp also forms long, upright stems, which make great skewers for grilling lamb, chicken, etc. kabobs! We originally planted the Arp in a half whiskey barrel, which has since rotted away, leaving it on a slight mound of original dirt. It's even survived PapaVino's misdirection of a blast of Roundup!

+1!
Munstead is also a more contained plant. Other lavenders are bushy (3'Hx2'W), and not the classic lavender scent.
I want some too!

Re: Be afraid, be very afraid.....
I have one little lavender plant and one little rosemary plant, both sharing the same 10" pot on my front porch. If they survive the summer I will bring them indoors because neither are hardy to -25! I also stuck 4 avocado pits in the pot around the plants. If any of them come up I will have quite the little temperate zone pot for the winter. Can't wait to try some lavender oatmeal chocolate chip cookies!
