And what I call a roly poley. I've been told they do no harm, but I don't believe a bit of it!!

Look like centipedes to me - so I believe they are predators and will eat pests. Smile

You've got some centipedes (the ones in the top picture and the one with the slug), and a pill bug (that's the official name of roly polies) in the bottom picture. I have no idea what that one in the second picture is, though it might just be a different kind of centipede I've never seen before.

Ok, so! The centipedes, though scary looking, are good for your garden because they eat other bugs that want to eat your plants. So keep them around!

Slugs of course are every gardener's worst enemy. Kill every one you see!

Pill bugs are kind of funny. They generally eat decaying plant material, BUT they have also been seen eating LIVE plant material too. This post has some amazing pictures. However, I'm not really sure how to get rid of pill bugs. I usually hand pick them from the garden.

Good luck with your bugs!

I was just looking at your pictures again. That second picture might be of a millipede. If the bug's body is flat, then it's a centipede. But if it's round (which it kind of looks like), it's a millipede. Millipedes are like pill bugs, in that they eat decaying plant matter but are also known to eat living plants. So if you see a millipede, try to remove it from the garden Smile

Thanks all. I'm going out and get me a couple of those bugs. Centipedes I think, have 1 leg per segment and millipedes have 2 per segment (on each side))

Bugs, what to do? Empty Pests wil have to go!

Post  littlejo on 5/20/2012, 9:07 am

I have determined they are millipedes, I have bunches of babies, that look like a little worm with antlers. Don't tell me they don't bother the plants. They love my strawberries. Eating them up. drilled holes and are inside of berries.

Looked online for control measures and there is not much to do. They absolutly love compost! which 1/3 plus is my garden! These are too small and too many to hand pick. There were 5 in 1 strawberry. Flooding the garden for at least 3 hours, don't use compost, or move the garden from the area for at least 5 yrs. These are not options that I can do!

Anything you'all suggest? I'd like to stay as organic as possible. But, they are messing with my strawberries! I got none yesterday that didn't have holes eaten out of the them.

I will go the chemical route if I have to. If I can't eat the berries, might as well kill them, but what to use?

The ones in the pic above are in a bed with other veggies, will they eat other veggies too?

jo, there are a few good suggestions in the publication. Perhaps less watering, a piece of trap fruit elsewhere in the bed, a dry mulch such as straw or even sheets of cardboard ma be of benefit.

Camp, thanks for the link. Figure 3 is good pic showing them, inside the berries. I have the berries on top of the mulch and they are hunting them down and destroying the berries. They are even eating the berries that are not ripe, still white. It's a shame, for the berries are putting on a bumper crop this yr.

Maybe if you get a mango, slice it in 1/3s ( 2 sides and the pit) and place those in the corners of the garden, the millipedes may be attracted to that instead. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!!

Does DE affect millipedes or just caterpillers? Would it be worth a try?

Kay, I've really had the run of pests this yr. I guess because the berries are doing so good. First was slugs/snails, and I used de on them. It helped a bit, plus I pulled all the berries and put on top of the mulch, which helped. Then came the roly polies and these milipedes. de did not seem to have an effect on them. I got an organic spray, contains pyrithum(bad spelling!) from crysanthiums and neem oil. Sprayed at half strength, being carefull not to spray berries or blooms. Well that has got the adults, but the babies are going wild. I sprayed again this am, full strength, on all, berries, blooms, leaves, and dirt. Only 1 day lead time on picking, so must not be very strong. My next spray if this does not work is to get a regular chemical. I'm really perturbed, for the plants are fineally bearing well.

Keep us posted on what works. I'm envying you the strawberries. This is just my first year, but I have high hopes for next year. I'm having trouble keeping up with the runners. I think I've searched the bed pretty good, but the next day there are many more and some really big.

Just happened to think about the plants at the berry farm where I went picking last week. They have all their plants on a raised berm that is covered with black plastic. Each plant is poking through a hole in the plastic. I wonder if you put a layer of plastic over the mulch and under the berries if it would help deter any hiding bugs.
Just an observation not a recommendation.

I don't know if it would help but maybe? They got the berries that were hanging over the edge of the bed.

I have been having a great yr with my strawberries. Producing at least a qt per day.

First was slugs, got slug pellets, worked pretty good.

Then came the milipedes. I got an organic spray, didn't help at all. They appeared to just multiply getting much worse. Had milipedes in approx. 50% of all berries picked.

I bought a chemical spray, but decided to wait, tried picking them out and killing them.

Today, 100% of all berries had holes with milipedes inside. I just gave up, got out the chemical spray and sprayed. Hope it works.

I sprayed all the isles in my garden, hoping the milipedes don't travel to my other beds.
