My beans say 9 per square. I only seen beans growing as a kid and that was only long enough to snitch them out of nanny's garden then run.. I don't know what a single plant looks like or how big they get. Are you sure there are supposed to be 9?? Do they need trellis, or stakes, or are they little and stand alone? How much beans if I water when I am supposed to...will each plant produce...

till next time..
Debbie.

9 per square seems like a lot...in a regular garden, I plant 3 beans every foot.

I plant half runner green beans. And yes they will need a trellis. They run...

I sow my bean seed thickly in the event any of the small plants fail. I think I put in somewhere between 12 and 16 per square. I thin them if necessary.

Beans come in bush or runner/pole varieties. Bush beans can get upward of 18-24 inches tall and pole beans run from 6 to 14 feet or more and require a trellis. Check your seed packet to find out which you have.

For the bush beans I have put stakes on the ends of the box and put string around the mass of plants to try to keep them contained and not overgrowing the neighbor plants.

Debbie welcome to the forum. Green or yellow bean question.... 396615 I am a rookie so not sure about the quantity of production. Since you said 9 per square I have to assume( dangerous) you have pole beans. I planted a bed at 9 per square but got carried away I planted 3 rows 8 feet long Green or yellow bean question.... P5113015 I have been told to get my canning supplies ready now lol! As you can see pole beans need a pole or trellis

Good luck with your garden there are MANNY knowledgable folks on here to help.

Are your beans bush or runner. It does make a difference. Bush will stand alone, but may need some support if you have high winds. I have read that just running a line around the square(s) will allow them to support each other. Runners need a trellis. Yes, according to ANSFG you can plant bush beans 9 to a square. Runner beans should be planted 8 to a square in two rows of 4.

As to how much they will produce I can't say on bush beans, but my runner beans usually keep producing until frost. My son got a meal for 5 people every week at first with his 4 squares of runner beans. Eventually they slowed down.

i plant 9 per square for all beans. for bush, i plant full squares. for climbers, i plant them at the same spacing but only on one edge of the square so they can go up the trellis, and fill the rest of the square with something else.

Sorry...forgot to mention that they are both bush beans. I have the Burpee Garden Bean (yellow eureka)
and the green bean is by McKenzie Heirloom classic.
I was going to do 4 squares of each...is that too many, but was wondering if their rows could go back to back or would they need an empty square between them?

Bush beans are planted 9 per square, a practice I have been following for a couple of decades. If a seed doesn't germinate, you can always push another seed into the spot. I don't plant beans until the soil is reliably warm. I'm in zone 5 something, so I don't plant my beans until the first week of June. When the bean seedlings emerge, you have to protect them until they have several sets of leaves. There are creepy crawlies that like to eat the growing tip, so either dust them, or if organic, cover with floating row cover for a few weeks.

I happen to like beans, so I usually plant a 4x4 box with two types of beans, Provider and Jade. This will provide you with bags of beans over a 2-3 week period, enough to have for dinner every night as well as freeze or can. If you keep the beans picked, they will produce a new set of flowers a couple of weeks later. I am able to pick beans right up to cold weather on one planting.

Pole beans are planted 6 per square and must be trained up a trellis. They produce later than bush beans but will continue to produce right up to frost. Last year I planted pole beans between the cucumbers and that worked well. The beans tended to out-climb the cucumbers so they didn't compete for sun.
