My pole beans are up and some bugs are eating all the leaves. They are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, gray and brown looking and if I don't do something I will loose them.

Any ideas on what they may be and what I can do to get rid of them?

Thanks

Yikes!!! That is the bugs that are crawling around and eating my beans so thanks for that link. O.K. I can get the stuff to make the spray but I was wondering if they will even make it, They just sprouted a few days ago and the first set of leaves is all they have and they are almost gone.affraid

Do I pull them out and start new? And they seem to be crawling up from the stem in one case so are they eating the roots too?

Will keep you posted on what I did and how effective things are working..thanks again for the link. I went online and one link said one cap full of Murphy's soap to one gallon.

Your sprouts are not eaten down enough to warrant starting over yet. Spray with BT and the new growth should make up for the early nibbles. Mine looked a lot like that until I got the BT going.

Does anyone know if this bug comes with red markings in the South? I have seen a bug with a similar body shape but it has red stripes horizontally across it's back...it seems to like my squash an awful lot! Plus, I just found some eggs on my pole beans. Sad

That looks like a Pill Bug.
Normally they eat mostly decaying organic matter, but sometimes they like fresh tender greens. When the bean plants get bigger they will not be a threat, but DE can take care of them. As always I encourage use of any product by following the label directions.

Dumb question but what is DE? I do have a compost pile close and also some mushroom manure I put in the bed last fall.

Have to find the source too

I got mine at a local nursery but I know Tractor Supply carries it. FYI, it is sprinkled on/in animal bedding to cut down on the bugs. I had a lot of ketchup and mustard squirt bottles left from running a resturant. I fill one about half way and use it as a puffer.

Now another question..Is this DE a liquid or a powder product? From what Camp's links it looks like a powder form. But you used mustard bottles so is it a powder?

Yes. I put the powder in the container, shake gently, and squeeze gently, puffing the dust up under the leaves, on the leaves and on the soil surface.. It's not the best thing available, but I had it handy and with some care it works.
