Sources for Mel's Mix ingredients in Brooklyn/NYC?
Hi Everybody,
I know I'm getting a late start this year but wanted to try to get my SFG going ASAP. Unfortunately, I am having trouble finding the ingredients I need for Mel's Mix (other than peat moss). Lowes and HD in the city don't even carry compost (let alone 5 types) or vermiculite it seems and I haven't found any places with anything larger than 8 quart bags. Being that I am trying to get a 48 Sq.ft garden going, I need larger bags.
Does anybody know of any places to get this stuff in town?
Thanks.
Mitch

You're even luckier in that Mel's Mix is sold at Home Depot in NY (It just started).
If you follow the instructions for the link below, you can see the chart of where it's available.
MM at HD in NY
From what I see it's available in Brooklyn at the HD at 550 HAMILTON AVE.

Yeah, I saw that. Unfortunately it is not true. I checked the HD website and it says it is not sold at any of the NYC stores and I just went to the Hamilton Ave. Location and they did not have it nor have a clue what I was talking about when i asked about it. They did at least seem to have 1 kind of decent compost. Oh well.
I have 2 other stores to check out, one of which does have vermiculite, but if no luck with 4 more compost types there, Miracle Gro it is...

I'm sorry about that. I got this from Victoria the CEO of the SFG Foundation and she received the info from Gro-Well the maker of the product.

Hi,
If you are willing to come to Long Island there is a great nursery called Hicks. It's just north of the Roosevelt Field Mall on Jericho turnpike. I purchased 2 cu. foot bags of horticulture grade vermiculite there, and they have compost, some of which is "premium" and some of which is just "regular" which I mix into my MM. You can take the Belt to SSP and go north on Meadowbrook to get there. Good luck.

Thanks. I Knew about King's County Nurseries and was actually about to go there. Did not know about CityGrow. Looks like between the two I can probably get what I need.

Re: Sources for Mel's Mix ingredients in Brooklyn/NYC?
Update:
After finally getting all my separate ingredients together from several different sources, I dropped by Home Depot to grab a couple last minute things for the garden and what do ya know...
They had 2 big pallets of the pre-mixed SFG Garden Soil. $8.97 per 1.5 CF bag. Not bad. Unfortunately, it was too late for me (pretty late in the season, too, right?). I easily spent that much per CF getting the separate ingredients which makes it even more frustrating.
Anyway, hopefully some of you can benefit from this...
