Poisonous Mushrooms - do i need to remove crops?
Hi, I have mushrooms growing in my garden that are oozing black-tar like substance. I've included a picture below. I emailed the San Diego Master Gardener organization and they responded today asking me to bring a sample by, but if they are in fact poisonous, I can't eat crops that grew from that soil. Is this true?! What a disappointment because I am having more success than ever with my veggies using my very first SFGs this season.
Here's a pic where you can see the black stuff on my "crookneck" sign.

Tiffany, I think you are putting your cart before your horse.... bring a sample to be tested before freaking out. Let us know what the results are.
I would encourage you to contact the Master Gardener that gave you that half-way lame advice and get some specifics from them on why they think you cannot eat food grown in the same 'dirt'.

Will do. BUT, if ignorance truly is bliss, then I'm sorry I ever emailed the Master Gardener org.
Kidding... kinda. :-)

Give these mushroom people a call, they will give you better information.

This might be what you have. Everything I find on it says it's not poisonous.

Very interesting. Definitely looks like it could be what I have. Also, because they tend to form due to decaying wood, I wonder if that's why I've never experienced them before until I used the SFG. Its untreated redwood. Although I don't seen obvious signs of decaying, maybe the fact that its wet wood releases something into the adjacent soil.
I'll run by the Master Gardener office now, especially since they are so close by. I'll let you all know what I found out.
Thank you!

More likely growing in wood in the MM. Redwood lasts so long because it doesn't host all these bioflora.
The other mushrooms to me look like inky caps. Also not poisonous unless eaten with alcohol.
But in any case I don't see why a poisonous thing growing next to a vegtable would be a concern? Isn't that like saying tomatoes are poisonous because their roots are?

Re: Poisonous Mushrooms - do i need to remove crops?
makes sense to me. the annoying thing is that in one of my SFGs I'm going mesclun. And they mushrooms are inking on the leaves when they touch them. I can clip and toss those leaves. Nonetheless, annoying. With that said. I'm experiencing so much success in the garden, that I shouldn't overly complain. Now if I could get my pug to stop pooping on the onion bed so I don't have to cover it, that would be awesome. Then again, she is a pug, which means she does whatever the heck she likes.
Thanks!

perhaps try watering less often... this may slow down the fungi...
