Greetings from Austin, TX
After several summers halfheartedly trying to grow bush beans and tomatoes in containers, I've made the larger commitment of building two SFG beds hoping for better results. Because of the combination of shade trees and dogs running amok in the back yard, I've installed the beds along the pathway up to the front door of the house. They look great and I get loads of compliments on them.
I've planted a ton of plants hoping that something survives! I've admittedly gone overboard and even planted some varieties late, but it's all about fun and experimentation this first year.
Bed One: Silver Queen corn, Kentucky Wonder pole beans, Quinalt strawberries, and Yellow Crookneck squash
Bed Two: Fairy Tale eggplant, Yellow Crookneck squash, Cherry Belle radishes, and Scarlet Nantes carrots
Container Plants: Cherokee Purple tomato, Lilac pepper, American Flag leeks, Sweet Aroma basil, Lime basil, Orange thyme, Lemon thyme, Silver thyme, French lavender, Pineapple sage, Spearmint, Curly mint, and Amethyst Falls oregano
As for the beds themselves, they are 2'x6'x11" and 2'x4'x11" and made out of 2"x6" rough-cut cedar. To brighten them up since they're in the front yard, I painted the outsides a fun shade of blue that's quite striking with my yellow marigolds. With the exception of one small store-bought cage for the pepper plant, I've made the tomato cage and bean trellis out of bamboo poles and jute twine. Both beds were filled with Ladybug Brand Square Foot Garden Blend and topped with Ladybug Brand Sylvan Tree/Shrub Mulch for moisture retention.
I've been using Bt to treat for caterpillars as well as beer and diatomaceous earth in the war against slugs. I typically water every 2-3 days and use Ladybug Brand John's Recipe fertilizer one a week.
I'm open to any suggestions/advice anyone might have, especially anyone SFG-ing in Central Texas.

Re: Greetings from Austin, TX
Hi and welcome from Canyon Lake. I'm on the south side of the lake, about 15 minutes from New Braunfels.
We put in our first garden this year. We have 4 raised SFG beds and are doing well now after a rough start. We were low on iron in the soil, and had the yellow leaves and shriveling up leaves you are talking about. This despite following the SFG method of 5 composts, verm and peat.
After fertilizing, our garden has turned around and we are doing great.
Do you have pics of your blue beds? I would LOVE to see that. Sounds just like "Austin"...
as in "Keep Austin Weird"...
