Hi, my name is Val and I live in Richmond, Va. This is my second year doing sfg, and i have and have read the book (since you always ask) Smile but I guess I don't retain info like I used to. I found this forum after I made my bed last year. So, I don't think we "fluffed" the peat,(now i'm thinking i started with a bag that was 3 cubic feet, which makes me think we put in 6 cubic feet) we didn't measure all the ingredients in a five gallon bucket to make sure there was the same amount of each, and I couldn't find a big bag of vermiculite, so I'm kinda thinking we didn't put enough of that into it. And I think we only had 3 or 4 kinds of compost. This year to get the bed ready we added more compost.
Last year stuff would grow, but not well, the mix is moist to the bottom, so I don't think water is the problem. This year even with the added compost, seeds started in the garden will sprout and then turn yellow and won't grow past and inch. I got some plants for home depot, and put them in the garden and they haven't grown either.

What should I do. Should I start all over, or is there a way to fix it? Help!
Thanks :/

Hopefully you keep a good sense of humor till this can be figured out. The surest fix in order to use the box right now is to begin again and do it correctly from the start. If you leave everything the way it is and try to guess what it needs, or want us to guess, would be a gamble. Having said that, personally, my choice would be to start over. Second choice is to gamble - add more varieties of compost, add more vermiculite, and cross your fingers. I'd also look at Mel's mix in the book page 62 and 63, All New Square Foot Gardening, because there are excellent close up pictures of the vermiculite in the mix and you could aim to have yours look like it. Good Luck and I hope others chime in with more ideas!

Quite honestly, I don't think having too little vermiculite or peat moss would be a problem. After all, Mel says in his book that he tells poor people in other countries to use straight compost Smile Now that said, it sounds like your plants aren't getting enough food. I would say try a liquid fertilizer. I had to my first year and did it my second year just to be safe, and I'm going to do it again this year because I know it works and my plants enjoy it.
