Hello from Albany Oregon

Post  GardeningMaster on 4/7/2010, 2:00 am

One of my loves in life is Gardening. I have always had a garden. My parents had a big garden and we caned a lot of food. we planted in long rows. No raised beds. Each year my dad would add lots of manure, rotted sawdust and mint into the garden. Over the years the wood shed was about a foot lower then the rest of the garden.

My home had wet soil so it was June before I could work up the garden area. I added lots of manure but that did not help soil from being wet. One year the city had to run a new sewer line right through the middle of my garden. All my hard work turned into a clay mess for a garden. The next year I made raised beds. I had some dirt haled in. This helped so I did not have a wet garden. I added some manure. My gardens we not as good as my dad would have. I composted last year.

This year I will will be my first year doing SFG. I will start with my raised beds I built last year. I will have to remove some of the soil out so I can put a wire barrier for moles and weed fabric. I plan to have soaker hoses barred at the bottom. Does this work? Then I will add Mels Mix. I look foreword to this new garden.

I also Love to fish, Anything Outdoors, I'm Married have three grown up daughters One dog and two cats.
Thanks Larry

Larry: First let me welcome you to the SFG Forum. This is the place to post questions and to help others if you can.

Soaker hoses do work, however, I put mine near the top of the bed 2 inches under Mel's Mix and it seems to be working well in my Table Top height beds.

As much as you loved row gardening you will fall in love all over again, this time with less work, less weeding and with less watering and more harvest per square foot. Sounds good doesn't it!

God Bless, Ward.
