Summer Sun and Garden Raiders in the Mojave Desert
Hi there.
This will be my first year using the SFG method. Last year, we planted onions, peppers, and hot peppers in a small space next to our driveway. They, along with my husband's roses and grapevine, were all attacked by rabbits and chipmunks. This year we have raised beds and a nice fence (~4 feet high and buried ~1 foot) protecting the beds. Unfortunately, the fences have only managed to keep out the rabbits as a few of my pea plants have been nibbled and my husband's infant carrot, lettuce, and melon plants have been eaten.
Does anyone know how to keep the chipmunks out of our garden? Also, daytime temps are typically +110 in the summer. Does anyone have any suggestions to shade our plants?
Thanks for the help.

As far as shade I would use old fashioned shade cloth.
What kind of whacko chipmunks live in the desert for heaven's sake. The only change I would have made to you plans would be to put hardware cloth in the bottom of the boxes to avoid the underground attacks. Or possible table tops, although with the heat they may not have been as useful. If the chipmunks are just crawling through the fence you might consider screen on the inside of it. It they are going over the fence - some sort of mesh or screen there. They sound very determined.

It has been very dry here the last 2 yrs and I have found offering water to the coons keeps them from eating my vegies as it is the water they are realy after perhaps that would work for you as well.

Not sure what kind of fence you have but here in the Inland Empire I have seen squirrels & rabbits go thru the holes in chain link fence. Ground squirrels also dig under and climb over fences. Cages with no larger than one inch diameter openings and wire bottems on your boxes will keep them out. Shad clothe can be bought many places including HD & Lowes.

Re: Summer Sun and Garden Raiders in the Mojave Desert
Hi again!
Well, we put hardware cloth around the outside of the fence, I've live trapped 5 antelope ground squirrels and a kangaroo rat, and we've put up a half dome (used the PVC pipe recommended in the book) and covered it with bird netting. The half dome really holds up to the windstorms (30 mph+) we've been having lately. At least for now, nothing's getting in. All we have to do when it starts getting crazy hot is put the shade cloth over the bird netting and stake down the shade cloth.
My peas and a couple of my tomato plants are getting ready for harvest while my onions and garlic continue to grow. The Roma tomato plant is doubled over with fruit and flowers. My husband's potatoes have started to blossom and his carrots, watermelon, and cantalope are recovering from the lousy buggers who were eating them.
Thanks for all the good ideas.

Also in the Mohave desert
Was wondering how things were still holding up as far as keeping the squirrels out.
I have seen the small ground squirrels we have here get stuck in 1" poultry netting, they have also gone through too. I have also had them chew through the bottom of a plastic trashcan to get at some laying crumbles. Lately I noticed that something was crawling up and chewing the old yucca leaves off. I suspect the squirrels but it could be the rabbits.
I'm also wondering what you have as a bottom barrier?
Thank you.
