So Cal cold snap
While everyone else is shedding their coats we got cold again! Wondering if anyone had any negative consequences from that. I still only have spring things in so they did OK. As a matter of fact, while I had my back turned the peas grew like 2 feet over a couple of days! And the support I had put in is not equal to the size. Because of the temporary nature of my living situation I did not want to do a full fledged trellis - have to buy everything fresh - but may have to cave in and just do it. If I am here that long, tomatoes are going there next so might as well.
Any snow in Castaic? Hope everyone fared well.

Chopper...did you see the ABC national news tonight? As I was headed to the garden the lead story was why we are having such cold weather...it's the jet stream! It's running down the coast, over to AZ/NM or NM/TX back up, over at Chicago, back down...and they are getting all our heat!
In my garden thread you can see pics from today. Everything looks fine...I was concerned with yesterday's wind that the hot houses would be all over the lot. They all in place. Protected by the wood I guess. Some are pressed in to the dirt, but others are pretty much on top.
I've got some weird plants that have come up. They are in the thread too.
I'm hoping to get more from my cool weather plants. That broccoli is bothering me!

There has been one change...ANTS! Was it the rain that brought them in, or the sugar flying around from the cake & frosting...or both?!? But it's an inside thing.

Weird. I would not expect them until it got hot.
So. Calif. Cold Snap
Everything survived the high winds we had over the weekend. Overall, our winter has had cold nights, but my blueberry plant began flowering in December.
As for ants, yes, they do tend to come out in hordes after a heavy rain. Several years ago, I was watering a non-SFG flower bed and noticed a gazillion ants hurrying away, each carrying what appeared to be an ant egg!

Ants are definitely a "washed out my dirt into the house" thing. Having sugar kicked out of the mixer only helped. The cake was pretty...I decorated it with pansies and violas.
I used to have ants living in my patio garden and they'd go running with their eggs anytime we sprayed down the patio. One time I looked up and the entire wall by my front door was covered with them! I heated up some water, added a bit of dish detergent (they hate the enzymes), pored it on their holes and edges of the house and have had very little problems since.
Glad your plants survived the winds. They really surprised me on Sunday. I see we're expecting more rain this weekend.
Are we in like a lion and out like a lamb?
We should have some dynamite poppy displays this year at the Preserve.
