We are from a hamlet called Limehouse within Town of Halton Hills, Ontario. We have been gardening for many years, and lately having terrible luck with rodents and rabbits.

I ran across SFG method early this year, and going to give it a try with netting etc to keep the predators out of the garden. Our garden will be between 60 to 80 sqft, and I will be starting to make boxes by the end of this month.

We have never planted carrots, chard, potato etc, and will be trying them out for the first time this year. So I am hoping that the netting will keep the rodents and rabbits out this year.

glad you\'re here Lazy Gardener!

Be sure you read All New Square Foot Gardening (2006). There are some great pics, instructions about "critter cages" which can be put on the box to keep pesky critters out of the veggies. There are also lots of pics on the forum of how people have actually secured them to the boxes, made them slightly larger to go over the entire box, etc. One member even built a "cage" that was essentially four walls and a ceiling around her entire garden to keep out squirrels! Search "critter cages" in the search box on the upper left of the forum. One thing to think about as you build your boxes is if you plan to put them directly on the ground, be sure to put wire hardware cloth on the bottoms. Make sure the holes in the cloth are smaller than your smallest underground pest. Some of our forum members have had problems with critters digging up through the boxes from underneath. This will stop that. Smile

We are happy to have you here and look forward to pictures of your progress which you may post after you've been a member for 7 days. I'm sure the Canadian members will be along shortly to welcome you. Be sure to check out your regional thread as they are a wealth of info on what to plant when and what varieties they plant in their area. Smile

Thank you for the tip on sealing the bottom of the box. I did not think of it, but now will make sure that the bottom is "sealed". I will do a search for critter cages here as well.

Hello Lazy gardener, I'm in South River, Ontario about 3.5 hours north of Toronto...
I'm a long time gardener too and this is my first year using SFG method. I don't have any boxes or my Mel's Mix yet.. we are only just starting our spring melt...

I DO have seedlings though! *doing the happy dance* rock on
I checked my potting shed today and my Collards and cabbages have come though.. still waiting on Onions though.

Check out the regional Canadian forums for other Canucks..

Welcome to SFG..

*hug*
