Hey all,

I'm looking for some good heavy duty clear plastic sheating for my SFG for frost protection.. Can anyone reccommend where to get some.. I've tried a few brands last year for my attempt at a cold frame but had problems with falling twigs punching holes in it .. Had to wind up triple layering it to make to frosts...

Would greatly appreciate it...

Have a couple of tarps but with my work schedule it makes it hard... They(the plants) may be covered all day.. Atleast with the clear plastic they'd be able to still get some sun...

Is it practical for you to move your cold-frame?

This is why I used to collect old windows at garage sales. Otherwise go to places like Lowes-Home Depo and get sheets of 6mil sheeting. It is more translucent than clear but it does the job (that is assuming that you and I are picturing the same thing when you say "twigs")

Right now I don't have a cold frame.. I plan on making a few later on, and I have some old windows specifically for that this season..

The plastic is MAINLY for the plants in the garden, to protect them from frost.. On workdays I'm up and out before the sun's up so if I cover them the night before I may not be able to remove it until I get home which may wind up being after sunset.. With the clear plastic, they'd still atleast get some light while I'm not home...

I was able to re-use/recycle some heavy plastic sheeting from a construction site that they had taken off the building they were working on. If there is some construction work in your neighborhood, maybe you can scrounge around those sites?

I wonder if you might not be able to shield what you already have with some chicken wire?

I made my A-frame with heavy clear plastic vinyl I got in Walmart. They sell it to cover tables, and for craft projects and it comes in different gauges from very thin to very thick. I bought the thickest they had. You can also find it in Jo-Ann's fabric stores. Its also great to cover your boxes if you want to warm up the soil in spring.

I'm not sure what size you need to cover, but I've used clear plastic shower curtains from the dollar store. They are REALLY strong.

Now that is a brain stirrer for me.. cheap shower curtains 72 x 72 inches £ 2.50 and are of a woven antibacterial sort of nylon cloth .. make good shade as well .

Do you think I'd get laughed at by my neighbours if I used the even cheaper £1 plastic sheets with ducks or sea shells on ???

plantoid,
That'd not be a laughing matter for residents in suburban housing developments across this great nation! Most such home owners (renters too!) are required to obey Home Owner Association (HOA) rules against gardens, let alone "tacky" plastic coverings atop garden beds.
