I'm new to the forums, forgive me if this is "old news" but I was pleasantly surprised to find that a link to my local city's .gov page shows how to have a free composting bin delivered right to your door. Might be worth looking into your city's website.

Diane - if you want awesome compost, this guy has amazing compost near Lindsey and Pecos. I've been buying from him the past year and my garden loves it. It's a blend of chicken manure, horse, wood chips, some sheep manure and a few other things. He churns it for 9 months before selling. You can pickup or he can deliver.

His name is Mike:

By the truck load 5 tons = 18.5 cu yards for $125 + Delivery.
Pick up in Gilbert; Sat, Sun, Small pick up $45 Lrg Pickup $55.
This is the best planting material you will find, anywhere.
In busines 10 yrs making and selling the same product.

wow, thanks for that tip! I will get in touch with Mike. Does he also sell soil, etc? We're putting our planter together this afternoon. 4' x 6' x 8" high. I've been researching all the different soil mixes people use... what do you find is a good ratio for the desert?

He just sells his compost mix. I use it with the normal 1/3 1/3 1/3 mix.... though I actually am more 1/2 compost 1/4 peat moss 1/4 vermiculite. My plants seem happy. It's just knowing what to plant when and getting a sun shade cloth up in the summer.

What will you be planting?

Are you getting your vermiculite at Sun West Container Corp in downtown Phoenix?

The city delivered two to me the next day.

Didn't know they'd be so big so I gave one to my neighbor who I supply with lettuce.

jkahn2eb, thanks for the tip on compost. The source I was getting compost from stopped selling plus your guy is much closer to me.

I live in Chandler and they also give out free compost bins, however, ours are made from old garbage and recycling bins that are cut in half. They give you the upper half with the lid and drill quarter size holes througout. I like the Gilbert ones much better.

FYI, I got my course vermiculite from Summer Winds nursery on Arizona Ave.

The 3 cu ft bag was $29 with tax yesterday from Sunwest. What was the cost at Summer Winds?

I think it was about 32 dollars. Summer winds is much closer to home for me so the extra cost was offset by gas savings. I also scored some Living Social coupons that got me 30 dollars with of merchandise for 15 bucks.

Nice, AZDYJ2K. I have no trouble supporting Summer Winds if only a few bucks more. I had a friend driving past Sunwest so he stopped there for me. I had him pick up two bags but I only ended up needing 3/4 of one bag. That's what a get for calcs in my head. Guess it doesn't hurt to have an extra bag laying around.

Should the composting bin be put in a sunny spot or is it ok in a mostly shady spot?

Well Albuquerque is not as enlightened as Gilbert...no free bins, darn it! they do have a municipal composting facility for yard wastes, but with the number of times I've seen those chemical services around town I'd be really hesitant to let any of that stuff get near my food!!!

I have 2 bins and they are both near my south fence line. They don't get much sun in the winter and here in AZ the cold is not a problem. One of my bins has steaming compost (it was at 110-120 degrees in the center the other day). The other one does not heat up. I think it's due to not enough browns and nitrogen so it's doing the slow cooking thing.

In short, I think it's okay to have it in the shade especially in our climate.

I had one of those black composting bins and found them a bit of a pain. You probalby should fasten the 2 halves together some way and stake it down. High winds would tend to blow the pieces apart. Found it was really hard to get in and stir the composte also. Has anyone set up drip irrigation in theirs? I find keeping things moist a bit of an issue in my bins during the summer.

Yeah - I need to get a tool that can reach inside and chop things up properly.... Haven't had much issue with the wind blowing it. Still need to throw a drip system into my garden!

Stumbled on this post from last year and decided to see what the city of Phoenix has to offer - turns out they sell compost bins for $5 at the landfill locations. I wish this information had been easier to come by - I would never have looked without this forum!

It is actually quite easy to find.  A search for Phoenix composting gets you to here   http://phoenix.gov/publicworks/garbage/disposable/composting.html
