Hi everyone,

We just moved into a new home a few weeks ago and I am really excited to do some SFG. We have huge evergreen trees on the perimeter of our property that currently shade a lot of the yard during the day. Is there anyway of knowing how that will change during the summer time? It appears that the former residents had a garden right below our deck (on the southern side of the property) and that is exactly where I'd want to do mine as well. But right now, that area is mainly shaded. I'd hate to put in all the time and effort and money if it's not going to work. Is there a website to see where the sun will rise and set in different seasons? I'm in New England and I know the sun will be higher in the sky so that should help.

Thanks!!!

Do a search for sun chart or solar chart, there are web sites that will calculate sun height at different times of year for you. I used one earlier. I am new to this forum and they don't allow you to post links during your first week, so I wasn't able to post a link directly. A simple google search found it.

You can use Google Sketch-Up...it's a free downloadable 3D modeling program with a shadow study tool. You could build a simple scale model of your house with proper orientation, trees with real height, then test shadows for specific months, days, time of day, etc. Here's a screen shot of a shadow study of my newest 4x4 box as an example.

Have a look on google earth and see if your property is in there .. you'll find an accurate north and with luck you will see a dat in the bottom right corner ..it might even have been photographed in string sunlight .

Armed with this knowledge you could start asking you neighbours about the height of sun in summer and work it out knowing that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west in though in high summer it will most likely rise just north of east and set just north of west.
