I'm a Life Member of National Home Gardening and receive a few e-mails each week in general, but also announcing new products. Today's product consisted of the item below, used for spacing your seeds in a straight line, presumably in a row garden. Shocked

Just as I was about to dismiss it, I paged down a bit to read that they claim their product is perfect for SFG. Well, that got my interest, and while I'm still not 100% sold, I thought I'd share with all of you, and see what the general consensus is. Wink

I don't recall what Mel called it, but I know that one of the phrases used in the book was something like "exact placement is NOT required" this seems like overkill, also seems (to me) like it wouldn't work that well for SFG squares since you still have to figure the row spacing (or whatever you want to call it).

Now, a set of these, but square, with one with a single hole, 4 holes, 9 holes and 16 holes, that I MIGHT go for, since it could make it a bit easier, but again, the method presented in the book seemed straightforward enough to me for, well pretty much anyone.

I already have a pair of easy seeders: six and three year old boys. The precision is just not there but I'm betting the benefits outweigh carrots an inch off here and there.

I certainly like the idea of it, if sowing in rows, but with seeding only a square or two at a time, I don't see the need for it. The spacing isn't ideal for our SFG squares anyway.

how about building something like this...

What do you think about this Planting Template for SFG? Seed_g12

Make plywood bases just smaller than 12" x 12" square so they fit inbetween the SFG grids, drill holes, glue dowels, etc. If you just drilled holes, you could use a pencil or finger to mark the seed spacing.

Hmmm.. I watched a guy pour all his 'mater seeds into a bin...grabbed a pair of tweezers...and tweezed and tucked away....I like the ol' finger and drop method myself...

More hands on I spose..

This is a great illustration and I had done almost exactly as you have pictured. I wish I could take the credit, but had taken an idea or two from Google, combined them and essentially ended up with the same thing. Did you do the illustration above on a CAD program or borrow it from the Web?

What do you think about this Planting Template for SFG? Empty My template

Post  BackRiver_SFG 2/22/2012, 8:31 am

I am intrigued with tool posted on this thread. Good clear plans posted as well on how to make it. I used some scrap wood to make a template for 16 plants, 4 plants (pictured) and 9 plants. One of the circle cut-outs is my soil packer now. I used the wooden dowel from a foam brush and attached to the circle. (pictured at top)

What do you think about this Planting Template for SFG? %3Ca%20href=What do you think about this Planting Template for SFG? File-7" border="0" />
When Planting I lay down the template, sprinkle some seeds in the center and push them with my trowel to the destination. I then sprinkle a little seeding soil on top. I then remove the template and there is a little mound of fresh soil hiding the newly sowed seeds. Just another idea.

I ended up changing the 1/2 gal/hour drip emitter with a 360 degree sprinkler.

Happy gardening

Post  quiltbea 2/22/2012, 10:17 am

joe.....You sure are handy with the tools. Great templates.

For watering purposes, instead of that mound of soil, I would think it better to have a shallow saucer around the seeds so the water can go directly to the root area. With the template in place, why not just shape a saucer with your fingers, drop in the seed, cover lightly with soil, then remove the template. With that wide opening in your template, its an ideal format. Just a thought.

@Quiltbea- I will check out that book you mentioned. Good point on making the imprint and then putting seeds and soil on top. I don't want my 1st watering to roll off of the target.

I got a really good laugh out of that one.

If there is a good engineer out there, I am sure there could be a device invented that plants seeds in every imaginable SFG dimension.  Maybe a device made out of tiny PVC pipe put together where you can stand up and drop the seeds in the top and have them emerge at the bottom into the holes where the seeds need to be placed.
