Lubber Grasshoppers Empty Lubber Grasshoppers

Post  rhanford 2/8/2012, 10:50 pm

While preparing my site for gardening this week, I have noticed loads of
Lubber Grasshopper Nymphs everywhere. I have done my research and have
some ideas on how to keep them at bay. Since I am new to this though, I
thought I would ask here and see if anyone has any tried and true
organic methods or suggestions that has worked for them.

Please and thank yous.

I had some trouble with grasshoppers late last spring. I looked on the net to see what their major preditor was. The answer I got was birds. I did not want to draw rats from the woods so no feeder. Made a bird bath kept it full of fresh water (we had a drought) birds galore. Soon the hoppers were gone between the birds and all the ones I did the grab and stomp with.Twisted Evil

Ok so I just read this info on the Lubbers and birds are not the answer for these littleLubber Grasshoppers 136416910 . Here is the link they have other organic tips I hope you enjoy it http://entomology.ifas.ufl.edu/creatures/orn/lubber.htm

We have had them every year here, but this year there are way too many! Yea, we have a bird feeder and a bird bath and of course these jerks are poisonous!

I was thinking about the organic control Nosema Iocustae. Its OMRI listed, but I know it stays in the environment for several years. Which can be a good and bad thing. I also made my own garlic spray. Apparently the jerks don't like cilantro either and I have read that a border around the plants you are trying to protect will also help.

I was just hoping someone had actually battled them and won! There is a great site I found with the best information with a myriad of good options: ghorganics.com/page12.html

It sounds pretty safe except it does not mention if it harms worms. Those little guys are almost like heroes....
